Enacted by a General Assembly, begun and held at Raleigh, oil
the eighteenth day of November, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and twenty-two, and in the forty-
sixth year of the independence of the said state.

CHAPTER I.
An act to provide a revenue for the payment of the civil list and contingent
charges of government.
die it enacted by the Genera I Assembly of the stale of North- Ca¬
rolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That 6 cento to be
there shall be annually levied and collected from all the real pro- levied on

pevty, with the improvements thereon, within this state, subject to <lollats
taxation, the sum of six cents on every hundred dollars value
thereof.
II. Be it further enacted, That each ami every person, who
shall peddle in any county in this state, and not 'on a navigable
stream, goods, wares or merchandize, not of (he growth or manu- H .liars to
facture of this state, or any wooden clock, or the machinery or

terials thereof, which shall not be of the manufacture of this state,
or jewelry, which machinery or clock shall be manufactured of
materials not of the growth, produce, or manufacture of this state,
shall pay the sherili'of each and every county in which he, she or
they shall so peddle goods, wares or merchandize or jewelry, the
sum of twenty dollars on every cart, waggon, or other vehicle, em¬
ployed in the transportation of said goods, wares or merchandize :
Provided, that no license to peddle shall authorise such pedlar to pro,;sa.
sell goods at auction : Provided, that, should two or more persons
employ one cart, waggon, or other vehicle, to transport then-
goods,' wares or merchandize, each and ever v of them shall pay
the aforesaid (ax on said cart, waggon, or other vehicle, by them
employed : nor shall any thing in tiiis act be construed to autho¬
rise two or more persons, under the pretence of being partners in
trade, to peddle goods, wares or merchandize under the same li¬
cense; which tax shall be accounted for by the slicriffin like man¬
ner as other taxes. And, upon paying such (ax, and obtaining a
receipt therefor, such person shall be authorised and permitted to
hawk and peddle goods, wares and merchandise, wooden clocks,
or the machinery or materials, which shall not be of (lie manufac¬
ture of this stale, or jewelry as aforesaid, iu such county, and no
other, for (lie term of one year thereafter. And every person who
shall peddle goods, wares or merchandize, not of the growth or
manufacture of rhis state, except vegetables or other provisions, of
the produce of the (Tinted States, on any navigable waters in this
