SLAVE RECORDS (1826-1865)
These records contain bills of sale (1826-1848) for purchases of
the Collins from John W. Littlejohn, Charles Caleb, Noah and Sarah
Phelps and heirs of Joseph Phelps, Sr., James Davenport, Joseph W.
Tarkenton, Daniel Woodley, Matthias E. Sawyer, Matthew Page, and
within the family. Papers concerning division of slaves in the estate
of Josiah Collins I include an order (1810) from the court; lists
(1840) giving evaluation of slaves at Edenton and shares designated to
the heirs.
There are also lists giving statistics, i.e. births, deaths,,
ages, names of parents and children at Lake Phelps; lists of slaves
belonging to Josiah III at Edenton, Beech Island,’ the Rope Walk,
Monticello, and the Point and of slaves belonging to other heirs. Other
items are lists of taxable slaves, statements of transactions (hiring
of slaves, exchanges, etc.) between the heirs; notes on individual slaves;
records (1831- 1864) of slaves hired.
Following the evacuation of some of the slaves from Washington and
Tyrrell counties to Orange and Franklin counties, during the Civil War,
records indi cate .adults , a n ci children who were to be carried up
country and list those transported and those left at the Lake, and the
families at Hurry Scurry Plantation in Franklin County. There are also
records of servants hired by individuals in Orange, Granville, and
Person counties, by the North Carolina. Rail. road, and by Confederate
hospitals at Raleigh and Kittrell Springs.
CHURCH RECORDS (1799-1881)
Miscellaneous items pertaining to church matters are: an extract
from the will of Charles Pettigrew stating his bequest to the members of
the Protestant Episcopal Church in Tyrrell and Washington counties of
his chapel, "by the name White Chapel," with the land belonging thereto;
a list of the clergymen at St. David's Church from 1836-1853 and others
officiating occasionally from 1869-1882. There are historical items on
Pettigrew's Chapel and St. David's Church (1799-1881); and a receipt
from Josiah Collins III for money collected for the Columbia Church. In¬
cluded also is the constitution of the Albemarle Church Building Society
with a list of officers elected at the primary meeting Plymouth, I856, .
to serve until April, 1859.
