Mount Airy, North Carolina on January 22, 1976. The papers originally
were in the possession of Mrs. Mary McNeely, Elkin, North Carolina.

Description: jesse Franklin (1760-1823) was born in Orange County,
Virginia, served in the Revolution from that state, and later
distinguished himself in North Carolina military service at the
battles of King’s Mountain and Guilford Courthouse. Following
the war, he served in the North Carolina state legislature, the
United States House of Representatives, and the United States
Senate where he presided over that body for about a year. He was
later elected governor of North Carolina and served in that
capacity from 1820-1821.
This collectioni consists primarily of newspaper articles and
other biographical sketches concerning Jesse Franklin. There is
also a letter from W. R. Edmonds, Raleigh, to Richard Franklin,
Elkin, September 23, 1910, stating his intention of writing an
article on Jesse Franklin and requesting materials from Richard
Franklin. An article on Jesse Franklin by Mr. Edmonds which appeared
in the University Magazine [University of North Carolina, Chapel
Hill], March, 1911, is also included in this collection.
