Description: Jacob Anton Karrer was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in
1816, and died in Raleigh in 1871. His second wife was Katherine
Dorothea Zeigler of Wurtemburg, sister of Babette Zeigler Besson of
Raleigh [See P.C.1568, Besson and Llnehan Family Papers]. Karrer, who
is listed in the 1860 census as living in Raleigh, operated a grocery
store near the corner of Martin and Salisbury streets.
In the collection is a certificate of domicile, similar to a
passport, issued May 29, 1847, to Jacob Anton Karrer in the town of
Tablet in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Such certificates
were issued when a citizen was leaving a country and would permit his
return without loss of citizenship rights. An endorsement indicates
that Karrer sailed from the port of LeHavre on the "Sweden" for New
York on June 14, 1847. [Translated by Mrs, Prisca Crettier]
One license is for the operation of a retail store in Raleigh,
issued June 27, 1865, by a special agent of the U. S. Treasury
Department in Raleigh after evidence of loyalty had been filed; the
other license is in the form of a receipt for payment of a $10.00
county tax and a' $10. 00 state tax to operate a store from November,
1869, to April, 1870.
