Collection: Hugh McDonald Paper, n.d.
P.C. ULZflJ.
Physical Description: 1 item, fragment of manuscript memoir
Acquisition: Information not available.
Description: This eight page fragment (pp. 5-12) appears to be a portion
of the memoirs of Revolutionary soldier Hugh McDonald. Beginning after
the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge in February of 1776, the narrative
describes the organization of General Francis Nash's brigade and its move¬
ments during 1776 and 1777 .[Nash replaced General James Moore as comman¬
der early in 1777]. Information of particular interest includes his des¬
cription of activities around Philadelphia during 1777, the battles of
Brandywine and Germantown. Also of interest is the beginning of a sketch'
concerning the Revolutionary activities of Whig leader Robert Rowan who
played a key role in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in 1776.
The location of the remainder of this manuscript is unknown. Segments
of the Hugh McDonald memoirs have been published, but the content of the
narrative varies greatly. For printed versions/ see: Clark, Walter, ed.,
