JUNE 2012 HOG REPORT
All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2012 totaled 8.7 million head, up 1% from March 1, 2012. Market
hogs, at 7.83 million head, were up 1% from last year and last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 870,000 head, up 2% from
last year and up 1% from March 1, 2012. The State’s pig crop during the March - May 2012 period totaled 4.554 million
head, up 3.0% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows, up 2% from the same time last
year. Pigs saved per litter averaged 9.9, which is up from the 9.85 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North
Carolina producers intend to farrow 455,000 sows during the June - August 2012 and 450,000 during the September-
November 2012 quarters. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
