Description

Correspondence sent to and received from the Director's Office in the Division of Negro Education in North Carolina. The Division of Negro Education was located within the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and started in 1921. Nathan Carter Newbold was the Division's director until his retirement in 1950. G. H. Ferguson, who worked with N. C. Newbold for many years, became the new director of the division following Newbold's retirement. The General Correspondence of the Director series includes correspondence, minutes, reports, programs, budgets, statistics, agendas, maps, and more related materials. The materials highlight the actions of the Division of Negro Education, educational professionals, and community members in their attempts to create, regulate, and enhance educational standards for African Americans during the segregation period.
