A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) was founded in Raleigh on July 1 3. 1908; and
WHEREAS, this company grew from a small, local business in an emerging industry in 1908 into one of
the nation’s largest and best electric utilities in an industry that powers our digital world; and
WHEREAS, electricity is a valued service that promotes health, safety, economic development, and adds to
the quality of life for all citizens; and
WHEREAS, the company provides electric service for hundreds of our state's communities - large and
small - including Raleigh. Asheville. Wilmington, Cary, Roxboro. Henderson. Goldsboro. Jacksonville. Morehead
City. Sanford, Asheboro, Rockingham. Pinchurst and Aberdeen; and
WHEREAS, in 2000 CP&L acquired Florida Progress Corporation, doubling the size of the company and
changing its name to Progress Energy; and
WHEREAS, Progress Energy continues to be a powerful partner with the State of North Carolina and its
citizens, and to all of its customers in the Carolines; and
WHEREAS, the success of the company continues to be closely linked to the growth and vitality of the
areas it serves, and Progress Energy continues to be a strong supporter of education, the environment, and
economic development; and
WHEREAS Progress Energy’s employees continue to be active citizens and volunteers for the betterment
of the community; and
WHEREAS, on July 13, 2008, Progress Energy celebrated the 100* anniversary of its company, and on this
day - July 14. 2008 - the company begins the first day of its second century of service;
NOW. THEREFORE. I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby
proclaim July 14, 2008. as "PROGRESS ENERGY DAY,’’ and commend Progress Energy and its employees on
this milestone achievement and wish them success as they begin their second century of service to our great state.
