EASLEY REMINDS MOTORISTS NOT TO DRINK AND DRIVE THIS HALLOWEEN Law Enforcement Conducting “Booze It & Lose It" Campaign RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley is reminding motorists not to drink and drive as they celebrate Halloween. State and local law enforcement officers will be cracking down during the next several days as part of a Halloween “Booze It & Lose It” campaign. “Halloween is a fun tradition shared by people of all ages but irresponsible behavior can quickly spoil the evening,” Easley said. “I urge North Carolinians to think ahead and not drink and drive.” The “Booze It and Lose It” campaign, which runs Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, features stepped-up patrols and checkpoints statewide. Last year, officers cited 900 motorists for driving while impaired during the effort. For a safer Halloween, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program recommends these simple tips: ■ Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person the car keys; ■ If you are impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to help get you home safely; ■ Promptly report impaired drivers to law enforcement; ■ Always buckle up - it is still the best defense against an impaired driver; and ■ Remember, Friends Don 't Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
