GOV. EASLEY ENCOURAGES ORGANIZATIONS TO APPLY FOR AMERICORPS GRANTS
Nonprofit and Community Agencies Should Submit Applications by March 3, 2008
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley today encouraged nonprofits and government agencies to apply for AmeriCorps
grants in order to strengthen communities in North Carolina. There arc more than $2.3 million in AmeriCorps
grants available for organizations that work to address education, public safety, homeland security, environmental or
human service needs. The N.C. Commission on Voluntecrism and Community Service, which is part of the
Governor’s Office, will coordinate grant distribution.
“AmeriCorps is an important and effective resource for our communities,” said Easley. “These grants can help
organizations across the state address crucial needs that would otherwise go unmet.”
Organizations interested in applying arc required to attend a training and technical assistance session. To register
for a workshop, e-mail Tim Kelly, training officer, at Tim. Kellv(ci), ncmail.net at least three days prior to the session.
The two remaining workshops arc free and will be offered on the following dates:
Wednesday, December 13, 2007, in Hickory
Thursday, January 17, 2008, in Goldsboro
Grant applications are due to the N.C. Commission on Voluntecrism and Community Service by noon on March 3,
2008. Application forms arc available on the Commission’s website, www. vol unteernc. ore, or by calling the
Commission at 919-715-3470 or 1-800-820-4483. Grants will be awarded based on community support, program
design, organizational capacity and budget adequacy, as well as sustainability and documented goals.
AmeriCorps is a national service initiative that is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service
and administered by the N.C. Commission on Voluntecrism and Community Service, a federal- and state-funded
agency housed in the Governor’s Office. The program is designed to increase volunteering and civic service in
America. AmeriCorps members currently serve in 10 different programs in North Carolina. Since 1994, more than
4,000 individuals have participated in N.C. AmeriCorps programs. Members serve in full-time, half-time,
minimum-time and education award-only positions and receive a living stipend and arc eligible for education
awards up to $4,725.
