GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN AMERICORPS GRANTS AVAILABLE
Nonprofit and community organizations should submit applications by March 23
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley today announced that more than $2 million in AmeriCorps grants will be available for
nonprofits and government agencies in North Carolina that work to address educational, public safety, homeland security,
environmental and human service needs. The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, a federal- and
state-funded agency in the Governor’s Office, will coordinate grant distribution.
“AmeriCorps members play a critical role in our communities,” said Easley. “They provide valuable services to citizens
in need of a helping hand while also strengthening community organizations.”
Grant applications are due to the commission by March 23, 2006. Each application will be judged on community
support, program design, organizational capacity, budget, goals and objectives, and program evaluation methods.
Organizations interested in applying are required to first attend a training and technical assistance session. To register for
one of these workshops, e-mail Tim Kelly at Tim. Kell vfamcmail. net at least three days prior to the session. The
workshops are free and will be offered on the following dates (locations have not yet been determined):
Friday, Dec. 16, 2005 - Fayetteville
Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006- Winston-Salem
Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006 - Asheville
Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 - Rocky Mount
Potential applicants who cannot attend one of these workshops can register for a conference call to be held March 2,
2006. Space is limited on the conference call and those who would like to participate are urged to e-mail Tim Kelly at
Tim.KelIy0incmaiI.net in advance.
AmeriCorps is a national service initiative, funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and designed
to increase volunteering and civic service in America. Members currently serve in 1 5 different programs in North
Carolina. Since 1994, more than 3,500 individuals have participated in N.C. AmeriCorps programs. Members serve in
full-time, half-time, minimum-time and education award-only positions, receive a living stipend and are eligible for
education awards up to $4,725.
