Easley on Superintendent Ward’s decision not to seek re-election in 2004: “I want to thank Superintendent Ward for his years of service as our state superintendent, local superintendent, principal and teacher. Mike has been a tremendous champion for public education throughout his career. His hard work and dedication has paid off as North Carolina’s students have improved test scores and the achievement gap has narrowed. Most importantly, Mike has never lost sight of the true goal of education: to promote the well-being of our children, providing an example that we all do well to emulate. His leadership will be missed.
