SwAin of Buncombe County, North Carolina. His mother was the
niece

of Joel Lane of Raleigh. Swain attended Newton Acadeny
in Buncombe, entered thellniverslty of North Carolina as a
Junior, in 1821, remained four months and then left to study
law under Chief Justice Taylor and received his law license in
December, 1822. He married Eleanor H. White, daughter of Secretary
of State William White and granddaughter of Governor Caswell, in
r: January, 1823. He returned to Buncombe and represented the county
in the House of Commons in 1825; in 1830 he was elected judge of
the QSdentcn DistrictjSuperior Court. He was elected governor in
l832i was re-elected and served until
1835»
He became president
of the University of North Carolina after leaving the executive
office and remained there until his resignation In 1867. Swain
died August 27, 1868.
Swain founded the Historical Society at the University
of North Carolina, with other interested citizens, and was president
in l8Uh«, Because of his interest in collecting materials on the
history of the State, Governor Manly designated Swain as a
historical agent for the State.
