Description: The earliest three letters are from New York business firms to
Edmund Haskins, merchant of Eaenton, concerning the settlement of debts owed by
Haskins (1802).
The remaining three letters concern William W. Birth, civil engineer of
Washington, D. C., and the rebuilding of the North Carolina State Capitol. Two
of these letters ire from Beverly Daniel, chairman of the Board of Commissioners
for rebuilding the Capitol, pertaining to the possibility of Birth’s returning
to his job as ’’Master Builder of Masonry” for the project (1835). The final
communication is from Weston R. Gales of the Raleigh Register, offering to
assist Birth in gaining a position in the South as civil engineer, and
commenting that engineer William Nichols, (who had repaired the old capitol in I '
1820 and had’ submitted plans for the new one) was in jail accused of the capital
crime of stealing a negro (-1841).
