An Ac! for encouraging the Culture of Hemp and Flax, and other Purpofes. (a)
Fi«n-.b!c. I. TTTf-lEREAS by Experience Hemp and Flax have been found to grow
VV extremely well in this Province, and being valuable Articles of Com¬
merce lor Exportation ; in Order to encourage the Culture thereof,
®°“"' H:m? II- BE it Enacted , by the Governor, Council, and AJfetnlly, and by lie Authority
of the fame, That every Perfon who lliail cultivate Hemp Or Flax in this Province,
and who (liall produce a Certificate, upon Oath, of his having fo done, and figned
by him or her, and attefted by any lawful Magistrate in the County where the lame
was cultivated ; and who fliall tender the Hemp or Flax that hath been by him or
her cultivated to any InfpeCior to be appointed by Virtue of an Aft, intituled, An
Ail to regulate the Infpsition of the feveral Commodities therein mentioned ; who on view¬
ing the fame, fliall find it to have been Water-roued, bright, clean, merchanta¬
ble, and fit for Exportation, lhall give a Certificate to the Perlon, mentioning the
Perfon’s Name tendering the fame, the Time tendered, the Weight and Quality of
the Hemp or Flax, and of his having examined, and found the l lcmp or Flax
mentioned in his Certificate, to have been Water-rotted, bright, clean, merchant¬
able, and fit for Exportation •, on producing of which Certificate by the Culiivator
of the Hemp or Flax, or his, her, or their Affigns, together with an Indoriement
thereon, under the Hands of the Collector and Naval Officer of the Port from
whence it may be Ihipped, certifying* that the Hemp or Flax therein mentioned,
had been duly exported, the Time when, and the Veficl’s Name in which ic wasfo
(hipped, to the Provincial Treafurcr for the Dillrift where the Hemp or Flax hath
been infpefted, fliall be paid to the Cultivator of Hemp or Flax as aforefaid, or
their Affigns, the Bounty or Premium hereafter mentioned, in the following Pro¬
portion, allowing One Hundred and Twelve Pounds to the Hundred Weight,
viz. For every Hundred Weight of He i p, Sixteen Shillings and Eight- Pence.
For every Hundred Weight ot Flax, Thirteen Shillings and Four- Pence ; and fo
in Proportion for a greater or lels Quantity : Which Premium or Bounty fliall be
paid by the Treafurer as before mentioned, out of the Monies in his Hands, or
may be in his Hands for Contingencies, and which fliall be allowed him in his
Accounts.

III. AND be it further Enabled, by the Authority aforefaid, That the Infpeftor
may take and receive, at the Rate of One Shilling, Proclamation Money, lor every
Hundred and Twelve Pounds of Hemp or Flax by him infpefted and found mer¬
chantable, and fo in Proportion for a greater or lefs Quantity, and for which he
fliall grant a Certificate as before mentioned.
D'lty on Hides IV. AND be it further Enabled, by the Authority aforefaid, That no raw or un-

tanned Hides, Pieces of Hides, or Calf Skins, fliall, from and after the Firft Day
of May next, be exported out of this Province to any Port ( Great-Britain only ex¬
cepted) by any Perfon whatfoever, unlefs a Duty of One Penny per Pound be paid
for the fame to the Collector of the rel'peftivc Ports where the lame fliall be (hipped
for Exportation ; and the feveral Collectors within this Province are hereby direct¬
ed not to clear out any Ship or Veflel, having raw and untanned Hides, Pieces ot
Hides, or Calf Skins, without receiving the laid Duty of One Penny per Pound ;
and the faid Collectors are hereby authorifed and direfted to adminiiter the follow¬
ing Oach to the Matter or Commander of any Ship or Veflel, viz.
I A. B. do fwear, that I have not on Board my Ship or Vejjel, any raw or untanned
Hides, Pieces of Hides, or Calf Skins , except what is mentioned in my prefen l Clear¬
ance ■, and that

will not cany out any during the Continuance of this prefent Voyage. ^
