The Answer of Samuel Pike def[enden]t to the bill of
compl[ain]t of George Ellis complainant
The s[ai]d def[endan]t, saving and reserving to himselfe now & at all times
hereafter all benifit of exceptions to the uncertainties insufficiencies
and imperfections in the bill of the s[ai]d compl[ainan]t contain[e]d for a full
perfect and direct answer unto all & every the matters allegac[i]ous
on things w[hi]ch are in the s[ai]d bill of compl[ain]t contained in any sort or
wise materiall or effectuall for the s[ai]d def[endan]t (by the law) to
answer unto, saith that the father of the s[ai]d ["Defendent" lined through] compl[ainan]t did not
purchase the tract of land in the s[ai]d bill of compl[ain]t menc[i]oned
neither doth the same of right belong to the s[ai]d compl[ainan]t neither
hath the s[ai]d defendant in his custodie ["and" was changed to:] any deeds of sale conveyances
writeings scripts or papers that does in anywise belong to the s[ai]d compl[ainan]t ^ or hath had or knowes of or now hath [end of inserted phrase] and this he is ready to aver and prove at this hon[ora]ble Court
shall award w[i]thout that [word blotted out] that any other matter or thing
in the s[ai]d bill of compl[ain]t contained material do charge this def[endan]t
w[i]th all or effectuall by him to be answered unto and not hereby
sufficiently answered confessed or avoided traversed or denyed is
true in such manner and forme as herein before is expressed
and humbly prayes from hence to be dismissed w[i]th his reasonable
costs and charges in this behalfe wrongfully sustained.
