Description: These papers are largely those of William and Nancy
Riddle, W. D. C. Riddle, and C. A. Riddle in Chatham and later
in Wake County. One folder contains the records of C. A. Riddle
as quartermaster of the First Regiment of the North Carolina State
Guard (1888-189U) . A few items, in a separate folder, relate to
the Barber family. .
Several deeds trace ownership of two lots in Pittsboro,
Chatham County, from Bartholmew Lightfoot (1826) to W. D. C. Riddle
(1856). Other deeds (1870-1882) are for the property of W. D. C.
Riddle in Wake County, near Raleigh.
Most of the Riddle correspondence concerns members of
the family; a number are expressions of condolence to Mrs. C. A.
Riddle on the death of her husband in 1897*
Miscellaneous items include: power of attorney from
Nancy and William Riddle to Elisha Dismukes in Madison County,
Tennessee (1830); Nancy Riddle's petition to, and an order from,
the court for a year's support (1036); a number of orders to the
jailor of Chatham County (1855-1856) for the detention of slaves
on runaway, assault, and murder charges; promissory notes of W. D. C.
Riddle (1856-1860), and certificates relative to his physical
disability preventing service in the a ray (1862), and a statement
of his government service as an employee of the North State Iron
and Brass Works in Raleigh; program for Memorial Day, May 10, 1875,
of the Ladies Memorial Association, Raleigh; papers of the Jr. Order
O.U.A.M. including the constitution and by-laws of the Carolina
council, assessment of dues from the Grand Lodge (Georgia, Alabama,
Mississippi, the Carolines, and Florida), and a petition to join
the Raleigh council (
