OCTAVIUS COKE,
Secretary of State.
This gentleman is a true North Carolinian, and his asso¬
ciations have been such as to render him well known; so in
brief we give the following facts: He is now 52 5'ears of age,
was a valiant soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia, where
he served his country for four years. He tells 11s that he is a
lawyer by profession and a farmer by practice. He was elected
to the State Senate from the First District, where he served in
1876-77, and in 18S0 and 1S82. Was Chairman of the State Dem¬
ocratic Committee. On the 4th of 4pril, 1891, on the death of
Colonel W. L. Saunders, was appointed by Governor Fowle as
Secretary of the State, aud on the 18th of May, 1892, was unan¬
imously nominated as his own successor, and elected by forty
thousand plurality.
SAMUEL MCDOWELL TATE,
Stats Treasurer.
Horn in Morganton, September 6, 1830. Educated at private
schools in North Carolina aud Pennsylvania. Appointed Cap¬
tain of Company D, 6tli Regiment, Regular Troops, May 20,
1861. Promoted Major at “Seven Pines,” May, 1S62. Promoted
Lieutenant-Colonel at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863; commanded
6th Regiment to the close of the war. Wounded at Sharpsburg,
September, 1862; at Rappahannock Bridge, November, 1S63;
at "Cedar Creek,” October, 1S64, and at Petersburg, March
25. 1865.
Elected President of the Western North Carolina Railroad
June, 1865, and remained a director of the road for private stock¬
holders till its sale. Was removed from its presidency' by Pro¬
visional Governor Holden in August, 1865. Again elected Pres¬
ident by Worth Board in August, 1S66, and again removed by
Holden’s “ Reconstruction ” Board in 186S. After sale of road
in

was elected private stockholders’ commissioner to
organize the system and work the convictforce oil the road, as
authorized by act of March, 1875, of which, as a member of
that Legislature, he was the author. Was a member of the
House from Burke three terms. Delegate to every Democratic
National Convention from i860, save and except the “ Greeley ”
Convention.
During Cleveland’s administration lie was appointed National
Bank Inspector, which position he held until November 19,
1892, when he was appointed by Governor Holt to succeed
Donald W. Bain, as State Treasurer, which term expires at the
next general election in November, 1894. Colonel Tate is a Dem¬
ocrat of the true Jeffersonian type, and an excellent financier.
