Judge Alfred Moore of the Supreme Court of the U. S.
Judge Alfred Moore, Associate Justice of the Supreme
Court of the United States when John Marshall of Virginia was
Chief Justice, was born at the Plantation, "Buchoi", the home
of his father, Judge Maurice Moore, on the lower Cape Fear River,
in what is now the State of North Carolina. The Moore family
were of Scottish descent, having odginally come from Edinburgh,
Scotland. The first member of the family known of in this coun- ■'

of Clarendon, now the State of South Carolina, ^he founder of the
City of Charleston. The direct line from Governor and Mrs, Moore
to Judge Alfred Moore was through the former's son, Maurice, a Col¬
onel in the British army, and through his son Maurice, a Judge on
the King's bench, who was the father of Alfred.
Judge Alfred Moore was born in 1755 in Brunswick County,
and after receiving his early education in the Colony of Aloermarle,
now North Carolina, was sent to Boston, Mass., to complete his edu¬
cation which he accomplished at an early date, returning to North
Carolina and being admitted to the Bar before he haa arrived at the
age of twenty-one. He practiced law in the courts of the Colonies
and at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War joined the regiment
of General Francis Nash, then Colonel Nash, and was appointed to
the rank of Captain. The regiment was then commanded by Judge
Moore’s uncle, General James Moore, who was later succeeded by Gen¬
