Description: Asa T. Spaulding, retired president of North Carolina Mutual
Life Insurance Company, was born in Columbus County in 1902. He received
degrees from Hew York University and the University of Michigan in accounting,
mathematics and actuarial science and has been a director, trustee, or
member of many organizations and the recipient of numerous honors. For.
biographical, information see a 13-page typescript included in the collection,
as well as a number of magazine and newspaper articles.
Of interest in the collection are speeches and articles by Mr. Spaulding:
"Negro Insurance," 19b3j "Horth Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and
the Durham Community, " 1967; "Opening Pandora's Box, A Management Dilemma,"
1971 Annual Business Leadership Lecture, Graduate School of Business
Admini strati on, The University of Michigan; "Kick-Off" message to the
Women -in- Action Coalition for the Reduction of Violence, I960; "Pregnant
History Delivers; Launching and Return of Apollo 11," Reprinted in-
Congressional Record; "Spaulding Comments on Negro Revolt," 1966, news
release.
After retirement from Mutual Life Insurance, rir. Spaulding became a
consultant of Boyden International Group, Inc. of Los Angeles and an official
in the Equal Employment Opportunity Services Division. He initiated a
movement for qualified minority and women representation on the boards of
directors of 109 of Fortune magazine's list of major corporations. In
September, 1973, Spaulding presided at a seminar/work shop for directors of
major corporations entitled "Women and Minority Directors of Major Corpora¬
tions." A second seminar/work shop called "How Free is our Free Enterprise
System" was scheduled fox' May, 197b, but was not held. Program and planning,
materials for both seminars are in the collection.
