Description: Archibald S. McMillan (19 June 1793-14 October 1867) was
born in Castle Sween, Scotland, the son of John and Sarah McGilp
McMillan. The McMillan family emigrated from Scotland, arriving at
Wilmington, North Carolina, between 1802 and 1805 , settling in Robeson
County. Archibald S. McMillan was one of at least eight children:
Euphemia, Archibald, Margaret, Alexander, John, Dugald, Sarah, and
Isabelle. John McMillan moved from North Carolina to Florida, where
he later died; and Dugald McMillan moved to Mississippi.
Archibald S. McMillan was married three times: Elizabeth Sinclair,
who died without issue; Fanny Cobb, by whom he had two children; and
Catherine McLean, by whom he had seven children. His second wife,
Fanny Cobb McMillan, is the addressee of several of the letters in the
collection.
McMillan was a farmer and miller and engaged in other activities,
including slave trading. His activities in the slave trade are des¬
cribed in several of the letters in the collection.
Of particular interest is his "Book of Arithmetic," prepared
between 1812 and 1817. At the end of the book are instructions on
how to read the Gaelic language.
