Mr. Toastmaster,
Dr. Strassner,
Honored Guests and Friends: -
It is a real pleasure to bring greetings from our Division in the Department of Public Instruction. Throughout the years our relationships with Shaw University have been most cordial and fruitful. In fact, had this not been a Baptist Institution and the one responsible for the teacher training program, a Baptist layman, this institution might have tended toward a quasi-public one.
When I came with the Department about three decades ago, it is probable that Shaw University was training more staff members for the public schools under the supervision of our Division than any other institution in the State - public or private. The presidents of two of the three normal schools training teachers for the elementary schools were graduates of this Institution.
In consideration of this fine service, the State paid the salary of the head of the department of Education for a period of ten years.
