CHAPTER XXIX.
An ACT lo incorporate Washington Academy, in the town of Washington in Beaufort
county, and appoint Trustees thereof.
Be. it enacted by the General Assembly of the Slate of North Carolina, and it
is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the commissioners of the town
of Washington for the time being, and their successors in office, shall be, and are
hereby declared to be a body politic and corporate, to be known iind distinguished
by the name and style of the Trustees of the Washington Academy, and by that
name shall have perpetual succession and a common seal; and that they, the said
Trustees, by the name aforesaid, ora majority of them, shall be able and capable
in law, to take, demand, receive and possess, all monies, goods and chattels and
choses m action that shall be given (hem for the said Washington Academy, and
the same apply according to the will of the donors, and by gift, purchase, and
devise, to take, have, hold, possess and enjoy, and retain to them and their succes¬
sors forever, any lands, tenements, and hereditaments of what kind soever, in spe¬
cial trust and confidence; that the same and the profits thereof, shall be applied
to and for the use of said Washington Academy.
II. Be it further enacted. That the said Trustees, or a majority of them and
their successors in office, forever shall be able and capable in law, to sue and be
sued, plead and be impleaded in all courts whatsoever, either in law or equity ; and
in general, they shall and may do all such other acs and things, as are usually
done by bodies corporate, for the purpose of effecting the objects of this act.
III. Be it further enacted. That the said trustees and their successors, or a
majority of them, may from time to time, make such bye laws and regulations for
their own government and that of the Washington Academy, and the preservation
of order and good morals therein, as arc usually made in such Seminaries : Pro-
tided, the same are not inconsistent with the laws and constitution of the State,
IV. lie it further enacted. That all laws and clauses of laws coming within
the meaning and purview of this act, be, and the same arc hereby repealed.
CHAPTER XXX.
An ACT to establish Gcnr.anion Academy, in the County of Stokes, and to incorporate the
Trustees thereof.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of. the State of North Carolina, and
it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That George Brookes, Wm.
H Lyon, Matthew R. Moore, Joseph W. Winston, Augustin II. Shepperd, An¬
thony Bitting, Isaac S. Gibson, William Cox, John Pepper, Constantine L. Run¬
ner, George C. Jor.es, John L. Bittinsr. Reuben D. Golding, Salathiel Stone,
Hampton Bynum, and John Hill, be and they are hereby declared to be a body
politic.and corporate, known and distinguished by the name and style of the trus¬
tees of Germanton Academy; and by that name and style shall have perpet¬
ual succession ; and they, or a majority of them or their successors, shall be able
and capable hi law and equity, to take, demand, receive and possess money,
goods, and chattels, lands, and tenements for the use of said Academy, and ap¬
ply the same according to the will of the donor.
II. And be it further enacted, That the said trustees, or a majority of them
and their successors, shall be able and capable in law, to sue and bo
sued, plead and be impleaded, in any court of law or equity, of this State; and to do
all such acts and things as may bo necessary and proper to be done by bodies cor¬
porate, for the advancemcntand promotion of science and learning, in said insti¬
tution, not inconsistent with the laws of ill is State.
HI- And be it further enacted, That whencuer any of the aforesaid trustees
shall die, remove out of Stokes county, resign, or by any other moans become inca-
