The Unfortunate Burial of Squire Lewis
It happened down in the South
Creek section of Beaufort County a
few years ago and has to do with the
experience of one Squire L. J. Lewis,
who lived in that section.
Mr. Lewis was taken seriously ill
and Dr. Josh Tayloe — now dead —
was summoned. After examining the
sick man, Dr. Tayloe immediately or¬
dered that he be removed at once to
the hospital in Washington for a vitally
necessary operation.
Carried to the Hospital
One of the neighbors loaned his au¬
tomobile for the purpose and the
Squire was carried to the hospital. Dr.
Tayloe notified Lewis’ wife and chil¬
dren that his case was a serious one
and that it was doubtful whether he
could recover.
At the hospital, however, the opera¬
tion proved a success. Within a very
short time the Squire was convalescing
nicely. He was so rejoiced over his
recovery that he determined to do
something by way of celebrating, so
he asked one of the nurses to sum¬
mon an organ dealer to the hospital.
When the dealer arrived at his bed¬
side, Squire Lewis instructed him to
send an organ to his home im¬
mediately. His instructions were car¬
ried out. The organ was securely boxed
and was sent to South Creek in charge
of a Negro drayman, who didn’t know
what was inside the box.
Family Was Worried
In the meantime, the Squire’s family
had been greatly worried about his
welfare. He had told one of the nurses
to write his wife and tell her that he
was getting along all right, but the
letter evidently had miscarried, or else
the nurse had forgotten to write. At
any rate, his family was in total ig¬
norance as to the outcome of the
operation.
And then, one bright cool morning,
one of the children, playing out in the
yard, observed the Negro drayman stop
at the farm gate, get down, open it
and drive up to the house. The child
ran into the house and told its mother.
Mrs. Lewis took one look at the box
on the dray and threw up her hands
in despair. Her wail of anguish brought
the other children to the front door.
“It’s your daddy!” she cried. “He’s
inside that box. He must have died
