CAROL LOWE TIM BUN
The force behind Shatley Springs’
successful operation is Lee McMillan,
a native of Ashe County, who retired
from a career as a Navy commander in
1976.
"I bought Shatley Springs in 1958 as
a business investment." Lee related as
Rejuvenation in the waters of Ashe
County has been popular for almost a
century. A great many people now find
re-creation in the New River, but hun¬
dreds still flock to the miraculous
waters of Shatley Springs. Not only do
they go there to drink the water and
take a gallon home w ith them, but they
enjoy the unspoiled atmosphere and
the delicious home cooked food which
Shatley Springs Inn offers.
The country inn is located four miles
north of the intersection of highways
22 1 and 16 near Jefferson. North Caro¬
lina. within easy access of the Blue
Ridge Parkway. Huge signs announc¬
ing the entrance to Shatley Springs
beckon travelers. A drive down a lush
country lane leads to a grassy clearing
where the buildings of the Shatley
Springs Inn rest comfortably beside a
beautiful lake. Pieces of farm machin¬
ery and tools sit as idle reminders of
former days. Painted a red brick color
accented with green trim, the buildings
suggest rustic simplicity. The central
building, housing the lobby, parlor,
dining room, and a gift shop, is fur¬
nished with pieces from the early
1900's. One of the most inviting fea¬
tures of this building is the long porch
lined with rocking chairs which vis¬
itors find irresistible before or after a
satisfying meal in the dining room.
