SIGNIFICANT — Fhe construction
of a new T-hcad pier at the State
Ports Terminal in Wilmington may not
appear to be a spectacular develop¬
ment. but its implications loom big in
the picture of North Carolina's indus¬
trial growth; for this pier will serve the
first major deep-water bulk liquid
caustic soda distribution center to be
established in this state, a facility of
Diamond Alkali Company.
To bring the picture into complete
focus it helps to have an inkling of the
role which caustic soda plays in Tar
Heel industry. "Caustic soda is one of
the work horses of the chemical in¬
dustry." explains R. U. Perry. Dia¬
mond’s southeastern representative,
"and it shares this position of im¬
portance only with soda ash and sul¬
phuric acid. There is scarcely a single
industrial chemical which does not de¬
pend upon caustic soda." Caustic soda,
by the way, is a compound derived
and processed from common salt,
sodium chloride.
This chemical, which will be de¬
livered to the Wilmington port terminal
by deep-water tankers front Diamond
Alkali's Deer Park. Texas, plant, will
be piped along the pier to Diamond's
$500,000 chemical terminal. The ter¬
minal. construction of which is prac¬
tically complete, consists essentially of
a half-million gallon storage tank, an
additional 50.000 gallon storage tank
(see cut), a nicklc heat exchanger
and an administration building.
Distribution from Wilmington will
be made by tank truck, rail and barge.
The terminal is scheduled to be in
operation by June, distributing caustic
soda to such industrial users as tex¬
tiles, pulp and paper, food processing,
chemicals, etc., throughout North and
South Carolina.
Diamond Alkali, an industrial new¬
comer to the Carolinas. is a major
producer of basic chemicals, manufac¬
turing more than 200 products in IS
diversified plants from coast to coast.
Its facility at the N. C. State Ports
Authority docks will be operated by
Wilmington Chemical Terminal. Inc.
The new T-head pier also lays the
basis for future bulk distribution of
other chemicals in North Carolina.
