ARTHRITIS DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, arthritis or chronic joint symptoms affect approximately 50 million Americans
and 300,000 children; and
WHEREAS, the chronic pain and disability of arthritis, or a related disease, affects nearly 2
million North Carolinians, including approximately 8,400 children under the age of 18; and
WHEREAS, unless this trend is reversed, the number of citizens affected by arthritis will soar
to an estimated 67 million Americans by 2030; and
WHEREAS, arthritis is a leading cause of disability in the United States, costing the economy
approximately $128 billion a year; and
WHEREAS, 902,000 North Carolina adults are limited by arthritis, with 1 1% being 18-44
years old, 37% being 45-64 years old, and the remaining 56% being over 65 years of age; and
WHEREAS, The Arthritis Foundation encourages involvement and volunteerism in the many
fundraising events held in North Carolina throughout the year, including galas, the Arthritis Walk, the
Jingle Bell Run, and much more; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina joins The Arthritis Foundation and other interested
agencies and organizations in promoting awareness about the effects of arthritis on adults and children
afflicted with this debilitating disease, and recognizes efforts to help prevent, control, and eventually
cure arthritis and related diseases;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North
Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 12, 2012, as “ARTHRITIS DAY” in North Carolina, and
commend its
all citizens.
