BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, North Carolina’s older population is expected to nearly double by July 2029,
totaling almost 3 million people age 60 and older; and
WHEREAS, aging is a lifelong process, the success of which is influenced by one’s physical and
mental health, family and community support, education and desire for learning, work and civic
opportunities, freedom from mistreatment and economic security; and
WHEREAS, it is never too early or too late to promote or improve one’s physical, mental, social
and financial well-being; and
WHEREAS, all North Carolinians benefit from a healthy lifestyle, active engagement,
volunteerism and multigenerational activities; and
WHEREAS, there are still disparities among individuals in the opportunities they have for aging
well, with some requiring greater assistance; and
WHEREAS, September is a month of special occasions recognizing and celebrating senior
programs and services and the many important contributions of seniors to our communities, including:
• Healthy Aging and Senior Center Month
• North Carolina Senior Games 25lh Anniversary
• Grandparents Day - September 13, 2009
• Employ Older Workers Week - September 21-25, 2009
• Adult Day Services Week - September 20-26, 2009
• Fall Prevention Awareness Week - September 20-26, 2009
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina,
do hereby proclaim September 2009, as the beginning of a year-long “LIVE WELL, AGE WELL”
campaign in North Carolina, and urge all citizens to commend its observance. 1 further urge all civic,
faith, scientific, medical, educational, voluntary, government and health and human service organizations,
to recognize the importance of heal^h^a^ing and the value of including seniors in all matters of public
and community affairs.
