Rules Of Professional Conduct Message From The Chair
The Licensing Board reminds each licensee that it is his/her responsibility to read, understand, and
follow the Rules of Professional Conduct for Geologists. These rules are presented in section 0.1 1 00
of 21 NCAC 21 and can be accessed through the NCBLG website. The Board has also decided to
print the Rules in their entirety in installments in four consecutive newsletters.
In this third installment, sections .1 101 (g), (h), and (i) are presented. Section (g) charges each
licensee to solicit or accept work only on the basis of his/her qualifications. Section (h) charges
each licensee to associate only with reputable persons or organizations. Section (i) acknowledges
certain occurrences that may result in revocation of licensure. Each section is presented in its
entirety below.

(g) The geologist shall solicit or accept work only on the basis of his qualifications:
1. The geologist shall not offerto pay, either directly or indirectly, any commission, political
contribution, gift, or other consideration in order to secure work, exclusive of securing salaried
positions through employment agencies.
2. The geologist shall compete for professional employment on the basis of qualification
and competence for proper accomplishment of the work. He shall not solicit or submit proposals
for professional services containing a false, fraudulent, misleading, deceptive, or unfair statement
or claim regarding the cost, quality or extent of services to be rendered.
3. The geologist shall not falsify or permit misrepresentation of his, or his associates',
academic or professional qualifications. He shall not misrepresent or exaggerate his degree of
responsibility in or for the subject matter of prior assignments. Brochures or other presentations
incident to the solicitation of employment shall not misrepresent pertinent facts concerning
employers, employees, joint ventures, or his or their past accomplishments with the intent and
purpose of enhancing his qualifications and those of his work associates.
(h) The geologist shall associate only with reputable persons or organizations:
1 . The geologist shall not knowingly associate with or permit the use of his name or firm
name in a business venture by any person or firm which he knows, or has reason to believe, is
engaging in business or professional practices of a fraudulent or dishonest nature.
2. If the geologist has knowledge or reason to believe that another person or firm may be
in violation of any of these provisions or of the North Carolina Geologist Licensing Act, he shall
present such information to the Board and furnish such further information or assistance as may
be required by the Board.
(i) Conviction of a felony without restoration of civil rights, orthe revocation or suspension of the
license of a geologist by anotherjurisdiction, if for a cause which in the State of North Carolina would
constitute a violation of G.S. 89E or of these rules, shall be grounds for a charge of violation ofthese
Rules and may result in the revocation of the certificate of licensure or corporate registration issued
by this Board and the imposition of a civil penalty not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000).

I am truly honored to serve you as Chair
during my final year of tenure with the
Board. My hope for these next months is
to continue the progress that has been
made by our Board members and past
leaders.
We are grateful for the service that our
outgoing Chair, Dr. Richard Spruill, has
provided to our North Carolina geolo¬
gists. As Chair, Dr. Spruill engaged us
with his leadership and excitement for
our profession.Although the Board will
miss him, his dedication continues as
President-Elect of ASBOG through De¬
cember 31, 201 0. As of January 1 , he will
become President of ASBOG. Please join
me in thanking Dr. Spruill for his hard
work, commitment and dedication as he
continues to advance our profession.

Board To Have Presence
At Regional Meeting
The NC Board for Licensing of Geolgists
(NCBLG) will host a luncheon on Friday at the
Southeastern GSA meeting in Wilmington.
Professors from colleges and universities
across the State will be invited to attend
and learn why professional licensure is
important and how it can benefit them and
their students.. Invitation letters will be sent
out from the Board to State Geology depart¬
ments. Past Chairman, Richard Spruill will
speak to the attendees of the luncheon. In
addition, the Board will have a display dur¬
ing the trade show held during the SEGSA
meeting to promote licensure. Dr. Spruill
will represent ASBOG and be available for
questions from future geologists regarding
the examination. (See page 4)
