Pre-MesozoiccrystallinerocksintheeasternportionoftheCaryQuadranglerepresenttheeasternmostexposuresoftheLateProterozoictoCambrianCarolinaterane.Asmall portionoftheLateProterozoictoCambrianCrabtreeteraneislocatedintheextremesoutheastcornerofthequadrangle.TriassicsedimentarylithologicunitsoftheDurhamsub-basinoftheDeepRiverMesozoicriftbasinunderliethewesternportionoftheCaryQuadrangle.
UltramafictofelsicunitsoftheeasternmostportionoftheCarolinaterane(Carysequence,Parker,1979;Caryformation,Hibbardetal.,202;Farar,1985a)havebeen metamorphosedtothechloritezoneoftheuppergreenschistfaciesduringlatePaleozoiccontractionaltectonothermalactivityandearlyMesozoicrifting.ThesmallportionoftheCrabtreeteraneexperiencedamphibolitefaciesmetamorphism.OnlyTriassicsedimentaryrocks,Jurassicdiabasedikesandsills,andsilicifiedcataclasiteareunmetamorphosed.AlthoughLateProterozoictoCambrianvolcanogenicrocksweresubjectedtolow-grademetamorphism,locallyundeformed,aswellasfoliatedandcataclasticallydeformed rocksoftheeasternmostCarolinateranepreserverelictplutonicandvolcanicigneous,aswellassedimentarytextures,whichallowforprotolithidentification.Inother exposures,partitionedhighstrainproducesmylonitic,ultramylonitic,andphylloniticrocksofvariableprotolithaffinity.
MetaigneousrocksinbothteranesareclassifiedandnamedusingthenomenclatureoftheInternationalUnionofGeologicalSciences(IU GS)subcommissiononthesystematics ofigneousrocksafterLeMaitre(202).Relictigneoustextures,modalmineralassemblages,ornormalizedmineralassemblageswhenwhole-rockgeochemicaldataare available,providethebasisfornamingmetaigneouslithodemes.ApreliminarylithodemicdesignationisdevelopedherefollowingArticles31-42oftheNorthAmericanStratigraphicCode.Theserockunits,whichlackgeochronologicdataandstratigraphicfacingdirections,warantsuchadesignation.PastmapsandlithologicdescriptionsofFortson(1958),Parker(1979),andFarar(1985a,b)intheCaryQuadrangleassistedthedevelopmentofthecurentmappingresults.Detaileddescriptionsofsomelithodemic unitsarereportedinBlake(194),StoddardandBlake(194),andBlakeetal.(2001).
TriassicsedimentaryrocksoftheCaryQuadranglearepartoftheChathamGroupoftheNewarkSupergroup(W eemsandOlsen,1997)andoccurintheeast-centralportionoftheDurhamsub-basin,acomponentbasinoftheDeepRiverMesozoicriftbasin.DetaileddescriptionsofTriassicsedimentaryunitsarereportedinHoffmanandGallager(1989)andClarketal.(2001).Duetotheinterfingeringnatureofthesesedimentsandthelackofdistinctmarkerbeds,lithofaciesmappingwasutilizedtogrouptherocksintomappable units.HoffmanandGallagher(1989)identifieddistinctlithofaciesintheDurhamsub-basin.Theselithofaciesweregroupedinthreelithofaciesassociations,identifiedasLithofaciesAssociationI(LAI),LithofaciesAssociationI(LAI),andLithofaciesAssociationI(LAI).Ingeneral,LAIcontainsinterbeddedsandstoneandsiltstoneandisinterpretedasbraidedstreamdeposits.LAIalsocontainsinterbeddedsandstoneandsiltstone,butisinterpretedasameanderingfluvialsystemsuroundedbyvegetatedfloodplain.LAIcontainspoorlysortedsandstone,pebblysandstone,andconglomerate.LAIisinterpretedasalluvialfancomplexescharacterizedbybroad,shallowchannels withhighsedimentconcentrations,andlocally,high-energydebrisflows.LAIlithologiesarenotpresentinthemaparea.
SedimentaryUnit
Q al-Q uaternaryaluvium:Tantolightgray,unconsolidated,poorlysortedandstratifieddepositsofangulartosubroundedgravel,sand,silt,andclayinstreamQal drainages.Includespointbars,teraces,andnaturalleveesalonglargercreekfloodplains.Foliationmeasurementsrepresentmesoscalecrystallinebasementinliers suroundedbyalluviumtoosmalltomapseparately.
IntrusiveUnit
Jd-diabase:Darkgreen-blacktogray-black,plagioclaseandaugiteaphyric,andlocallyplagioclasephyricdiabasethatislocallyolivine-bearing.W eathersJd totan-gray,spheroidallyrounded,densebouldersandcobbles,orpunkycobblesandpebblesthatcanbetracedalongstrikewhereoutcropisnotcontinuous.
NewarkSupergroup,ChathamGroup
Trcc Trcc-conglomerate:reddish-browntodarkbrown,iregularlybedded,poorlysorted,cobbletoboulderconglomerate.Muscoviteisraretoabsentintheverycoarse-grainedtogravellymatrix.Anarbitrarycut-offofgreaterthan50percentconglomeratedistinguishesthisunitfromtheTrcs/cfacies.Clastsarechieflymiscellaneousfelsicandintermediatemetavolcanicrocks,quartz,epidote,bluish-grayquartzcrystaltuff,muscoviteschist,andraremeta-graniticmaterial.Maximumclastdiametersareinexcessof2malongHaleysBrancheastoftheRDUairport.

Trcs/c-sandstonewithinterbeddedconglomerate:reddish-browntodarkbrown,iregularlybedded,poorlysorted,coarse-grainedtopebbly,muddylithic
Trcs/c sandstoneswithinterbeddedpebbletocobbleconglomerate.Muscoviteisraretoabsentinthematrix.W ell-definedconglomeratebedsdistinguishthisunitfrom conglomeratebasallagsofTrcs.Anarbitrarycut-offoflessthan50percentconglomeratedistinguishesthisunitfromtheTrccconglomeratefacies.Conglomeratebedsarechannel-shapedandscourintotheunderlyingsandstonebeds.UnitgradeseastwardintoTrcc.
Trcsc-pebblysandstone:reddish-brown,pebbly,poorlysorted,coarse-grained,lithic,feldspathicsandstone;locallycontainslaterallydiscontinuouspebbleandTrcsc cobbletrainsandconglomeraticchannellags.
Trcs-interbeddedsandstoneandpebblysandstone:reddish-browntodarkbrown,iregularlybeddedtomassive,poorlytomoderatelysorted,medium-tocoarse-
Trcs grained,muddylithicarkoses,withoccasional,matrix-supportedgranulesandpebblesoras1-5cmthickbasallayers.Muscoviteiscommontoabsent.Occasionalbioturbationisusuallysuroundedbygreenish-bluetograyreductionhalos.Bedsaretabular,1-3metersthick,withgoodlateralcontinuity.UnitgradeseastwardintoTrcs/c.
Trcsi/s-siltstonewithinterbeddedsandstone:reddish-brown,extensivelybioturbated,muscovite-bearing,siltstoneinterbeddedwithtantobrown,fine-toTrcsi/s medium-grained,muscovite-bearing,arkosicsandstone,usuallylessthanonemeterthick.Siltstonescancontainabundant,bedded,calcareousconcretions(interpretedascaliche)andironnodules.Bioturbationisusuallysuroundedbygreenish-bluetograyreductionhalos.
Trcs/si2-sandstonewithinterbeddedsiltstone:cyclicaldepositionalsequencesofwhitish-yellowtograyish-pinktopalered,coarse-toverycoarse-grained,

Trcs/si troughcross-beddedlithicarkosethatfinesupwardthroughyellowtoreddish-brown,medium-tofine-grainedsandstone,toreddish-brown,burowedand rootedsiltstone.Bioturbationisusuallysuroundedbygreenish-bluetograyreductionhalos.Coarse-grainedportionscontainabundantmuscovite,andbasal gravellagsconsistofclastsofquartz,bluish-grayquartzcrystaltuff,andmudstonerip-ups.
FaultRocks Trsc-silicifiedcataclasite:tan,tan-brown,andwhite,silicifiedcataclasitethatiscommonlyhematitestainedlimoriteordisplayshematite-filledfractures.OtherTrsc fracturesareinfilledwithidiomorphictoxenomorphic,massivemilkyquartz.AngularclastsofTriassicsedimentaryunitsandthehighlysilicifiedandrelictfoliatedcrystallinerocks,especiallytheColesBranchphyllitearecommonalongtheJonesboronormalfaultzone.Someclastsresemblechlorite-whitemica phylliteorphylloniteoftheSycamoreLakegreenstone.

CZrg containingporphyritic2-4mmbluequartzphenocrysts.Boulderfieldsandmassiveoutcropsarexenomorphictosubidiomorphicmetagranodioriteorfoliatedandlineated,protomylonitictomyloniticgranodioriticgneiss.Aggregatesofwhitemica,quartz,plagioclase,andorthoclasehighlighttheminerallineation.Locallycontainssubidiomorphicbiotiteplatesandisolatedclotsofepidoteandbiotite,andiswhitemica-richingneissiclayers.ContainsenclavesofSycamoreLake greenstoneandmicrodiorite,andiscrosscutbyfine-grainedapliticdikes.
CZslg�SycamoreLakegreenstonemetadioriteandmeta-microdiorite:Mesocratic(CIgreaterthan50),variablylightgreen,gray-green,anddarkblack-
CZslg green,fine-tomedium-grainedrockscontainingchlorite,epidote,albite,whitemica,andminorbiotite.H asacrystalloblasticmatrixthatlocallycontainsrelict porphyriticplagioclaseandporphyroblasticactinoliteingreenstone.Equigranular,finelyphaneritic,sausseritizedplagioclase,andblockyactinolitedefinethe microdiorite.W herefoliated,formswhitemicachloritephyllite,phyllonite,orschist,anddisplayadip-parallellineationofchlorite-white-mica-quartzmineral aggregatesorveinfibers.FormsenclavesintheReedyCreekmetagranodiorite.

CZcbp compositionallayeringalternateamongwhitemicaphyllitelocallycontainingquartzandplagioclasephenocrysts,mesocraticwhitemica-chlorite-biotitephyllite,andlocallyveryfine-grainedgreenstoneandchloritephyllite.Typically,high-strainmyloniticand/orphylloniticfabricelementoverprint,especiallyadjacenttotheJonesboronormalfault,obscuresprimaryprotolithtexturesandcontactrelationships.TheserocksmaybevolcanicorvolcaniclasticbaseduponstructuralandlithodemicpositionwithrespecttotheBigLake-RavenRockschistlithodeme.Identifiable,lesssilicified,clastsinTriassicsilicifiedcataclasitetypicallyarethisphyllite.
CZpbg�PotsBranchgreenstone:Melanocratictomesocratic(CIgreaterthan50),variablylightgreen,gray-greenanddarkblack-green,fine-tomedium-grainedCZpbg rockscontainingchlorite,epidote,albiteandactinolite.Hasacrystalloblasticmatrixthatlocallycontainsrelictporphyriticplagioclaseactinolite.
CZbr1-BigLake-RavenRockschist(upper):W hite-graytowhite-tantowhite,fine-tomedium-grained,wellfoliatedandlocallylineated.ResistantoutcropsCZbr1 arecommonlywhitemicaschist,althoughcompositionallayerscontainingbiotiteand/orchloritearepreserved.Locally,outcropscontainclastsincludingwhite
Fe tograyphylliteinferedtobemetamorphosedlapillitephraorfine-grainedvolcanicrocks,therebypreservingrelictfragmentalvolcanictextures.Otheroutcrops containamixedassemblageofroundedclastsofmaficandfelsicvolcanicdetritusthatrangeupto20cminlength,reflectingavolcaniclasticprotolithpriorto metamorphism.Fepolygonsindicateareasthatcontainfloatofiron-oxiderock.LocalpatchesofironstonefloatoccurinhilltopssuroundingBigLakeinUmsteadStatePark.

CZbr2 ofwhitemicaquartziticschistarecommonalongtributariestoSycamore,Crabtree,andSwiftCreeks.Abundantresistant,relictphenocrystsofbluequartz,albitic plagioclase,andsanidineupto3-5mmindiameterarewellpreserved.Localdomainsofwhitemicaphylliteorfine-grainedschistuptoseveralcminlength maybemetamorphosedlapilliclastsorrockfragments.Themode,porphyritictexture,andinferedrelictclastssuggestafelsicdaciticvolcanicorvolcaniclastic protolithforthislithodeme,whichismappedbetweenUmsteadandRavenRockStateParks.SycamoreLakegreenstoneandmicrodioriteformscompositionalinterlayerswiththefelsicschist.LocalfloatcobblesandpebblesofironstoneoccurinhilltopssuroundingBigLakeinUmsteadStatePark.
