BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, according to the North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics, cancer has long been the
leading cause of death in North Carolina and was the

leading cause of death in North Carolina in 2007: and
WHEREAS, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, cancer accounted
for 17.267 deaths of the total of 74,419 resident deaths in North Carolina in 2007, or about 195 deaths per 100.000
people: and
WHEREAS. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and 1 .4 million
people will be diagnosed this year, according to the American Cancer Society; and
WHEREAS, more than 560.000 Americans are expected to die from cancer this year. African-American
men and women have the highest mortality rates for all cancer sites combined, and cancer is the number one killer
of those under age 85. according to the .American Cancer Society; and
WHEREAS, the cost of cancer last year was S206 billion, according to the American Cancer Society; and
WHEREAS, the state of North Carolina has concern and compassion for people affected by cancer; and
WHEREAS, by uniting people affected by cancer to raise awareness through education, prevention,
screening and early detection efforts, we gain strength in the light against cancer in North Carolina: and
WHEREAS, we are committed to ensure all cancer patients are treated with compassion and respect, and
are provided with the tools and resources necessary to battle the physical, emotional and practical challenges of a
cancer diagnosis: and
WHEREAS. North Carolina is home to the most advanced cancer treatment centers and hospitals: and
WHEREAS. LIVESTRONG DAY exemplifies the spirit of people affected by cancer — survivors,
caregivers, friends, family, physicians, nurses, social workers and researchers throughout North Carolina:
NOW. THEREFORE. I. MICHAEL F. EASLEY. Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby
proclaim May 13. 2008. as "LIVESTRONG DAY" in North Carolina and commend this observance to our
citizens.
