POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on National POW/MIA Recognition Day. we honor the Americans who have been
prisoners of war and recognize them for enduring unimaginable hardships while serving in military
conflicts around the globe; and
WHEREAS, there are 760.000 veterans currently living in North Carolina: and
WHEREAS, we remember those who arc still missing in action, some 78.000 plus from World
War II, Korea, and Vietnam, of which 2.300 are from North Carolina; and
WHEREAS. Americans will never forget those who have borne the indignities and sufferings of
captivity in service to our country, those missing in action, or those who died as prisoners of war, far from
home and family; and
WHEREAS, on this day, the POW/MIA flag, a black and white banner symbolizing America's
missing, is a constant and powerful reminder to people around the world that our nation will keep faith
with those who have served and sacrificed: and
WHEREAS, America has pledged, as a nation, it will not rest until there is a full accounting of
every American veteran missing in action: and
WHEREAS, today we ask the citizens of North Carolina and the nation to remember them in our
thoughts and prayers, wherever they are or wherever they have fallen, with special sympathy and concern,
and remember too the courageous families who maintain their steadfast vigil in their search for peace that
comes only with certainty;
NOW, THEREFORE. I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do
hereby proclaim September 21. 2007, as "POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY" in North Carolina, a day
dedicated to all former American prisoners of war. to those still missing, and to their families and urge all
residents of the State of North Carolina to join me in honoring those outstanding individuals.

and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.
