BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, throughout the 217-year history of the State of North Carolina, lawyers have provided
service to this state, including William Hooper and John Penn, signers of the Declaration of Independence,
William Blount, signer of the U.S. Constitution, James Iredell, the sixth associate justice of the U.S.
Supreme Court, and James Caswell, the first Governor; and
WHEREAS, according to the N.C. State Bar, 20,462 active attorneys and 344 state and federal
judges are currently licensed to practice law in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, according to the respective law schools, an additional 2,750 students are studying law
in the state’s five existing law schools located at Campbell University, Duke University, North Carolina
Central University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest University; and
WHEREAS, the national observance of Law Day was first proclaimed by President Dwight D.
Eisenhower on February 3, 1958; and
WHEREAS, according to its records, the North Carolina Bar Association, with more than 14,000
members and its 4,500-member Young Lawyers Division, encourages North Carolina students in grades
four through twelve to participate in law-related competitions held in conjunction with its annual Law Day-
Celebration; and
WHEREAS, this State and this Nation have strong tradition of liberty and justice, because of the
contributions of dedicated members of the legal profession, this year proudly marks the 49th annual
observance of Law Day;
NOW, THEREFORE, I MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do
hereby proclaim May 5, 2006. as “LAW DAY” in North Carolina and urge our citizens to recognize the
