BY THE GOVERNOR OF TIIE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, North Carolina is fortunate to have a rich variety of natural resources, and our
citizens have developed a deep appreciation for the many recreational opportunities which being outdoors
in this State affords them; and
WHEREAS, the 3,500 miles of trails that cross our State are an integral part of these recreational
possibilities in North Carolina and promote an enjoyment of scenic beauty by our citizens and our visitors,
whether they find it on a remote beach or mountaintop or beside an urban greenway; and
WHEREAS, our trails vary from less than a mile in length to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail that is
approximately 1,000 miles in length; and
WHEREAS, they range from rugged footpaths on mountain ridges to bikeways along abandoned
railway corridors, from canoe trails down our Slate’s rivers to bridle trails in the rolling Piedmont; and
WHEREAS, trails also offer quality-of-life benefits to all North Carolinians as expressions of
local community character and pride, as living workshops for science education, as tools for economic
revitalization of a community, as accessible alternative transportation, and as sites for social and cultural
events; and
WHEREAS, the planning, construction, and maintenance of our trails through citizen involvement
is crucial to the continued success of our trails program; and
WHEREAS, with the support of businesses, non-profit corporations, trail clubs, volunteer
organizations, and local, state and federal government agencies, the North Carolina Trails Committee is
working to expand the trails that connect North Carolinians all across the State;
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do

opportunities in their communities and throughout our Slate and ask them
development in North Carolina.
