GOV. EASLEY ASKS CITIZENS TO CONSERVE WATER
DROUGHT CONDITIONS REMAIN DESPITE RAINFALL
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley is asking citizens to conserve water following today’s drought
advisory issued by the North Carolina’s Drought Management Advisory Council (DMAC) for portions
of central North Carolina.
“Despite the recent rainfall, we still have drought and dry conditions throughout portions of central
North Carolina,” said Easley. “We are not in serious drought conditions at this point, but just
managing our water use prudently will solve the problem. I urge all citizens to conserve water to help
prevent a crisis situation during this dry spell.”
The moderate drought in central North Carolina reflects relatively low rainfall totals between Oct. 6-9
as compared to other areas in the state, long-term precipitation deficits, low streamflows and continued
low reservoir levels. The counties listed under moderate drought conditions include Alamance, Anson,
Cabarrus, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Durham, Granville, Guilford, Lee, Montgomery, Moore,
Orange, Person, Randolph, Richmond, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Union, Vance and Wake.
The Governor is asking all citizens to minimize nonessential water use and adhere to water restrictions
in their local communities.
Citizens can conserve water by adopting the following tips:
• Use dishwashers only when they are full. Washing dishes by hand (without the tap running)
saves about 25 gallons.
• Adjust the water level on clothes washing machines, if possible. Wash full loads only if not
adjustable.
• Irrigate your lawn between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to prevent water loss through evaporation.
• Water your lawn only when it shows signs of wilt. Grass that springs back when stepped on
does not need water.
• Install drip irrigation systems close to the roots of your plants.
• Limit residential vehicle washing.
