Legendary Entertainer Percy Sledge in Concert at the J .E.
Broyhill Civic Center.
Legendary entertainer and soul-singer Percy Sledge will be in concert at the J .E. Broyhill Civic Ctenter on
Thursday, May 15, 2008. Sledge will close the 2007-2008 Showcase of Stars season at the Civic Center
with a night of hits from one of music’s greatest performers.
If you mention the name Percy Sledge to just
about any music fan in the world, you'll
invariably elicit a woebegone version of "When A
Man Loves A Woman." That song is Percy's sig¬
nature and a tune that defined the summer of
1966 and every one thereafter. Percy Sledge is,
however, far from a one- hit wonder. He's had a
number of significant chart hits including 'Take
Time To Know Her," "Warm And Tender Love,"
"Out Of Left Field, "ItTears Me Up," "I'll Be Your
Everything" and others; his is a successful career
that is now in its fifth decade.

Growingup in the South, the young Percy naturally learned to sing in church, and by the time he'd entered
his teenage years, he was doing it professionally with a group called the Esquires Cbmbo. A former
fieldhand, Sledge spent the years following high school working as an orderly at Colbert Cbunty Hospital
in nearby Sheffield. There, a former patient introduced him to local producer Quin Ivy; with the
encouragement of Ivy and assistance from promoter Phil Walden, Sledge went solo in 1966.
The very first song Ivy recorded was Sledge's own "Baby, Why Did You Leave Me," a lament he'd recent¬
ly written after a bad breakup. With help from songwriters Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, as well as a
churchy organ from Spooner Oldham, the reworked "When A Man Loves A Woman" became an instant
smash, paving the way for several similar hits and putting Oldham, producer Dan Penn, and Musde
Shoals, Alabama, on the musical map for all time. The Atlantic label signed Sledge immediately.
As soul got smoother in the early Seventies, Sledge's hits became fewer and farther between, leaving him
to quit the business for a while. But a 1987 UK ad for Levi's reintroduced his first hit to audiences, and
Percy's been on the road ever since, even releasing two critically acclaimed blues albums in Blue Night
and the recent Shining In The Rain.
Whether you're a long-time fan or just getting a taste for rock, soul and blues, you will not want to miss
rock and roll hall-of-famer and Grammy- winner Percy Sledge when he hits the stage at the J .E. Broyhill
Qvic Center on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the show are $ 18 for children and $25 to
29 for adults.
