Bicentennial Postponed,
Bicentennial Celebrated
Although Governor James 15 I hint Jr. proclaimed February
19% University Library Month, it wasn't until Wednesday,
May 8. that the Bicentennial celebration look place, thanks to
the February 7 ice storm. Hy the end of the day, librarians,
faculty, staff, students, members of the community and
long lime Library supporters agreed that the postponement had
been forgotten in the joy of celebration.
The festivities began at 1:30 P.M. in Wilson Library's Pleasants
Family Assembly Room. A symposium on " The Library, Past and
Future" drew over one hundred and titty attendees Keynoter
Ur. Scott Bennett, Yale University Librarian, .set the tone with an
historical overview of the technologies of knowledge and freedom.

Librarian Jim Covan spoke of the challenges and complexities
they faced in implementing the 197? 20-year plan Their accounts
of the efforts that made the libraries great were revealing
testimony to theii own leadership. Associate Provost Joe Hewitt
concluded the afternoon program with a look at the I ibrary’s
past and how its values endure in the present and future
"information age."
Guests then adjourned to a reception and last opportunity to
view "A Celebration of Donors," the Bicentennial exhibit which
opened on February 2. The exhibit, which brought logelhei
highlights of the Rare Hook Collection made possible by
gifts, included treasures such as the first, second, third, and
fourth millionth volumes donated by the Hanes family of
Winston-balem; a beautiful volume on hummingbirds donated
by Arthur Clark of Durham just last year; examples from the
World War 1 and II poster collection assembled by Bowman
Gray; and many works from other donors.
That evening, representatives of state government, university
administration, faculty, librarians, and students and staff continued
the celebration at a dinner in the main hall of the Walter Royal
Davis I .ibrary. (See page ;> for excerpts from speakers' remarks.)

In addition to greetings from Governor Hunt presented by
Secretary of Cultural Resources Betty McCain, Chancellor
Michael Hooker, Friends Board members Ed Pleasants and Anna
llayes, Provost Dick Richardson and Joe llewitt spoke. Tnkie
Hondros, Class of 1998, made a special trip back to Chapel I till
to represent ibe student voice. m>
