HOWE-HARRIS HOUSE (c. 1890)
Block 94 Lot 5
The Howe-Harris House at 520 South Ninth Street
was built about 1890 and, at least from 1900, was the
residence of Valentine Howe (1844-1904), a carpenter-
builder and member of an important family of Wilmingtor
craftsmen. Howe was also a volunteer fireman and a
representative of New Honover County in the North
Carolina Legislature. He died here in December 19Q4.
In June 1895 Mr. Howe was Foreman of the Cape
Fear Steam Fire Engine Company #3 and, until August
1898, when he retired after five years of service,
was President of the North Carolina Colored Firemen's
Association.
In 1918 James H. Harris, a banker, and Cora Howe
Harris, his wife and daughter of Valentine Howe, re¬
sided here.
