Where the
Money Is
( From We the People )
The total property valuations for the
100 counties for 1961 were $794,-
591.504. or more than three quarters
of a billion dollars more than the
valuations for 1960. Although the
average tax rate is slightly decreased,
the total tax bill is considerably in¬
creased and will be the highest
property tax bill in the history of the
State. Even so. the 1962 property tax
bill will most likely be in excess of
the 1961 property taxes.
The three-quarters of a billion
property valuation is due largely to
new industrial growth and re-valuation
in some of the counties. Also, we have
considerable growth in the suburban
areas. This total increase over 1960
cost about SI0 million in new taxes
in 1961.
The twelve counties listed below
have in excess of one half of the total
valuation of the State. That is. the
total valuation in these counties is
greater than the total valuation in the
other 88 counties.
The high tax rate counties are as
follows; that is, $2.00 or above for
1961:
1— Alleghany $2.20
2 — Anson 2.11
3— Avery 2.10
4 — Buncombe 2.19
5— Clay 2.00
6 — Craven 2.15
7 — Mitchell 2.00
8— Pender 2.05
9 — Robeson 2.05
10 — Sampson 2.15
11— Scotland 2.15
These are 14 counties having a tax
rate of $1.00 or less, with Stanly
having the lowest rate, at $.53. Gener¬
ally. the small rural counties have the
smallest valuations with the highest tax
rates, and the industrial counties have
the higher valuations and the lowest
tax rates.
