What Teachers
Are Paid NOW
Just what the 1961 General Assem¬
bly's education bill did for teachers'
salaries is outlined in an article in the
N. ('. School Bulletin, which we di¬
gest below.
It shows a teacher can draw front
North Carolina an annual salary as
high as S5.605.50. if she holds the
Graduate Certificate and has had 13 or
more years of experience.
To this is added — in some school
systems — supplements ranging up to
several hundred dollars a year. So. for
the first time, a classroom teacher in
higher than the regular maximum. A
differential favors vocational teachers.
And those who teach beyond the 9-
nionths school year get substantially
more. For example, an agricultural vo¬
cational teacher on a 12-months con¬
tract might, at the end of 13 years
experience, receive from the state S7,-
632 per year.
Principals' salaries vary according to
the size school, but go up to $8,770
for a principal with 8 years or more
experience serving a school with 42
or more teachers. Average increase
for principals will be 21.13 per cent.
Supervisors get a monthly salary
about 10 per cent above the regular
teacher schedule for ten months’ term,
going up to $6,660.
Superintendents' salaries start at $7,-
560 for beginners in smaller school
systems, going up to $15,420 for the
superintendent with 8 years’ experience
in a system with 30.000 or more stu¬
dents. The superintendent with an ad¬
vanced certificate will get $30 per
month on top of that, and the su¬
perintendent with a doctor's degree will
get $50 additional monthly. To this
also, we presume, may in some cases
be added local supplementary salaries.
Assistant superintendents will get
$8,460 per year from the state.

North Carolina can — and does —
make more than S6,(X)0 for one school
year.
Front this top. the scale runs down
to S3, 607.50 per year for a teacher
holding the
А
Certificate, and to
this, also, is added a supplement in
some counties and cities.
These salaries are for a 185-day
School year. The total average increase
in annual salary is 22.4 per cent, the
largest increase, we believe ever given
to North Carolina school teachers at
one time.
A few teachers will make less than
the "minimum” recorded above. These
arc holders of "B" certificates (college
graduates without practice teacher).
There also are lower salaries for hold¬
ers of "C" certificates, and lower
grades. Relatively few teachers hold
these lower certificates.
But in some cases, incomes will be
