50 YEARS CELEBRATING THE PAST... LEADING THE FUTURE

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Agricultural Institute at North Carolina State University was established in
the fall of 1959 with the approval of the North Carolina General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, in the fall of 1960, the first class of 95 students entered the program for post-secondary
training in agriculture; and
WHEREAS, the institute provides technical training in agriculture and hands-on learning at state-of-the-art
facilities and teaching farms; and
WHEREAS, students focus on studies in nine possible majors and hundreds of career opportunities; and
WHEREAS, agriculture and its related areas continue to be a leading North Carolina industry, with a
tremendous demand for graduates to replace a retiring workforce; and
WHEREAS, after 50 years, the Agricultural Institute (AGI) is still part of the College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences (CALS) at North Carolina State University, and its primary purpose is to provide students with the
practical experience needed to be productive in the many careers within the agricultural industry; and
WHEREAS, AGI was ranked No. 1 in the nation among two year associate degree programs in 2006 by
Community College Weekly; and
WHEREAS, over 5,000 graduates received a two year Associate of Applied Science Degree, preparing
them for agriculture and related careers; and
WHEREAS, through leadership and professional development experiences, AGI graduates are respected,
effective, responsible citizen leaders in their communities; and
WHEREAS, the AGI celebrates fifty' years of providing an outstanding educational program to the citizens
of North Carolina and others, ensuring a promising future for leadership in agriculture and its related areas;
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby
proclaim 2010-2011, as the “YEAR OF THE AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE: 50 YEARS CELEBRATING
THE PAST ...LEADING THE FUTURE” and commend its observance to all citizens.
