PROBATION, PAROLE AND COMMUNITY SUPERVISION OFFICERS’ WEEK
2008
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers are an essential part of the
criminal justice system; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers uphold the law with dignity,
while recognizing the right of the public to be safe-guarded from criminal activity; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers are responsible for supervising
adult and juvenile offenders in the community; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers are trained professionals who
provide services and referrals for offenders; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers work in partnership with
community agencies and groups; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers promote prevention,
intervention and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers provide sendees, support and
protection for victims; and
WHEREAS, probation, parole and community supervision officers advocate community and
restorative justice; and
WHEREAS, according to the Department of Corrections Personnel Office and the Offender
Population Unified System, the Division of Community Corrections employs 2,013 certified officers who
supervise approximately 1 18,000 offenders in North Carolina communities each year;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do
hereby proclaim July 13-19, 2008. as "PROBATION, PAROLE AND COMMUNITY
SUPERVISION OFFICERS' WEEK" in North Carolina and encourage all citizens to honor these
