GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES NEARLY $4 MILLION IN AMERICORPS GRANTS FOR 2007-2008
10 Programs Across the State Receive Funding
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley today announced the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and
Community Service has awarded $3,68 1,970 in grants to 10 AmeriCorps programs across the state for the 2007-
2008 program year. AmeriCorps members serving with these organizations will assist in community outreach
and education efforts, build affordable houses, participate in mentoring programs and work in other service
activities.
“With this award of nearly four million dollars in grants, AmeriCorps members will be able to continue
working to improve the lives of people throughout North Carolina,” Easley said. “1 am grateful for their service
to our state and I look forward to another successful year.”
The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education at the UNC at Chapel Hill School of Education received
a $292,955 grant to fund N.C. Literacy Corps. In this program, AmeriCorps members tutor at-risk students to
increase reading and language capabilities as well as work to improve student attitudes and behaviors toward
learning. The program also assists with tutoring programs on college campuses in the state. N.C. Literacy
Corps offers services in Alamance, Burke, Craven, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Orange, Pitt, Richmond,
Robeson, Rockingham, Scotland and Wake counties.
The East Carolina University College of Education received a $632,839 grant to fund Project HEART (High
Expectations For At-Risk Teens). AmeriCorps members tutor at-risk students in 3rd through 9lh grade using the
Great Leaps and Comprehension Strategies reading program. Members will also tutor 9lh and 10th grade
students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program which focuses on reading, vocabulary,
writing and higher order thinking skills. Project HEART serves Craven, Johnston, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, Pitt
and Washington counties.
The Stokes Partnership for Children received a $293,666 grant to fund AmeriCorps and Children Together
(ACT). AmeriCorps members serve as assistant pre-school teachers, providing enrichment activities to the
children and release time for instructors so teachers can further their early childhood education. ACT serves
Alamance, Buncombe, Forsyth, Cleveland, Henderson, Hertford, Rockingham, Stokes and Surry counties.
Habitat for Humanity received a $450,1 37 grant to fund Habitat AmeriCorps - North Carolina. Members serve
as crew leaders, training community volunteers and partnering with families in the construction of affordable
homes. Members also assist in the recruitment, management and recognition of community volunteers. Habitat
AmeriCorps - N.C. serves Avery, Cabarrus, Catawba, Chatham, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Mecklenburg,
Moore, Orange, Randolph, Richmond, Wake and Wayne counties.
