BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, modern-day basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education professor
and instructor, as a means of keeping his gym class active on rainy days; and
WHEREAS, the first game of basketball was played on January 20, 1892, with nine players and ended
with a score of 1 -0; and
WHEREAS, in North Carolina, basketball is played and enjoyed by people of all ages and socio¬
economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, basketball is a favorite pastime for citizens from Manteo to Murphy, and for all ages, and
promotes physical fitness and teamwork; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is home to some of the best basketball teams, players and
coaches in world; and
WHEREAS, collegiate basketball in North Carolina brings communities together and stirs passionate
loyalties and rivalries among fans; and
WHEREAS, year after year, North Carolina men’s and women’s collegiate basketball teams dominate in
the ACC, NCAA, CIAA and other conferences; and
WHEREAS, the Charlotte Bobcats represent the State of North Carolina in the National Basketball
Association; and
WHEREAS, cities and towns across North Carolina are home to little league, middle and high school,
intramural, church and community basketball teams helping our youth build confidence and develop physically
and mentally; and
WHEREAS, basketball is part of North Carolina’s heritage and has helped shape our way of life;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do
hereby proclaim Wednesday, June 29, 201 1, as “BASKETBALL DAY” in North Carolina, and urge our citizens
to commend its observance.
