ARTHROGRYPOSIS AWARENESS DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a condition that causes joint stiffness and
joint deformity at birth; newborns with Arthrogryposis lack normal range of motion in one or more joints; and
WHEREAS, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita is an umbrella diagnosis caused by an underlying
condition or syndrome; and
WHEREAS, joints that can be affected by AMC include hands, feet, hips, knees, elbows, shoulders,
wrists, fingers, toes, jaw and spine; and
WHEREAS, Arthrogryposis affects one in 3,000 live births; and
WHEREAS, a newborn with three contracted joints in two different areas is diagnosed with
Arthrogryposis; and
WHEREAS, there are over 400 different types of Arthrogryposis, including Amyoplasia and Distal
Escobar Syndrome that are more common, however, some individuals may never have their type of
Arthrogryposis identified; and
WHEREAS, there is no cure for Arthrogryposis but it is treatable with therapy that promotes daily
physical activity to improve range of motion and muscle strength;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim
June 30, 2015, as “ARTHROGRYPOSIS AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance
to all citizens.
