93rd GENERAL CONVENTION
2015
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African
Americans, was founded at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond
of brotherhood among African descendants in this country; and
WHEREAS, the visionary founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman,
Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy,
succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of
humanity; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., since its founding on December 4, 1906, has supplied voice and vision to the
struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world; and
WHEREAS, the aims of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., are Manly Deeds, Scholarship and Love for all Mankind; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is a worldwide fraternity with 686 active chapters located in the United States,
Germany, Bermuda, Korea, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and Canada; and
WHEREAS, the Association of North Carolina Alphamen has 23 undergraduate chapters on the campuses of public and
private North Carolina Colleges and Universities and 18 alumni chapters serving communities across North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., under the leadership of the 34"' General President, Mark S. Tillman will
convene the week of August 3, 2015, for the 93,d General Convention in Charlotte; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is to be commended for celebrating 108 years and keeping true to their
mission “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service
and advocacy for our communities”;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim the week of August
3-9, 2015, in recognition of “ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY’S 93rd GENERAL CONVENTION” in North Carolina, and
commend its observance to all citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, 1 have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the
Capitol in Raleigh this third day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand and fifteen, and of the Independence of the United
States of America the two hundred and fortieth.
