GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES GRADUATION OF N.C. AMERICORPS MEMBERS
RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley announced today that more than 400 AmeriCorps members from across North
Carolina will graduate from the 15 state AmeriCorps programs this summer. These AmeriCorps members helped
more than 2,100 students, families and teachers totaling more than 387,000 hours of combined assistance as tutors,
mentors and Habitat for Humanity workers in communities throughout the state.
“AmeriCorps members spend their days working to improve the lives of people throughout North Carolina,” Easley
said. “I congratulate our volunteers on the successful completion of the AmeriCorps program and thank them for
both their hard work and for encouraging others to take part in this important initiative in our state.”
After graduating from the AmeriCorps program, full-time AmeriCorps members receive a $4,725 educational
award, part-time members receive a $2,632 education award and minimum-time members receive a $1 ,000
educational award. The money helps pay for college expenses.
The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood AmeriCorps program, coordinated by the Child Care Services Association,
holds its graduation in Durham today at the Waterford Village Apartments at 3 p.m. These AmeriCorps
members assisted 35 pre-school teachers and 674 pre school children so these teachers in Durham, Wake and
Orange counties could further their education and participate in professional development courses.
The N.C. Habitat AmeriCorp program, coordinated by Habitat for Humanity International, will hold its
graduation conference at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside hotel in Wilmington July 9-1 1 . Habitat AmeriCorps
members built 80 affordable homes for 274 families in Cabarrus, Catawba, Chatham, Cumberland, Davidson,
Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Moore, Nash, Orange, Randolph,
Wake and Yancey counties.
The AmeriCorps Cares program, coordinated by the Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts and Education in
Wilson, will hold its graduation at the Sallie B. Howard School on Tuesday July 1 1 at 1 p.m. AmeriCorps
Cares members tutored 350 students in kindergarten through third grade at the charter school in Wilson
attended primarily by students from low- to moderate-income families.
The AmeriCorps Cross Cultural Education Service Systems (ACCESS) program, coordinated by the UNC
Greensboro Office of Research Services, will hold its graduation at the Greensboro Historical Museum at 1 1
a.m. on July 15. ACCESS AmeriCorps members provided interpretation and translation services over 50,000
times and distributed disaster preparedness literature to residents in Alamance, Chatham, Davidson, Durham,
Forsyth, Guilford, Mecklenburg, Orange, Randolph, Surry and Wake counties.
