A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the dedication, service and sacrifice of the 65,h
Infantry Division - the Borinqueneers during the Korean War; that dedication, sacrifice and service to our
country contributed to our freedom and to making North Carolina a wonderful place to live, work and raise a
family; and
WHEREAS, the Borinqueneers were the first infantry division from Puerto Rico in the Korean War;
in addition to their sacrifice, they endured segregation and discrimination for their language and culture; and
WHEREAS, members of the Borinqueneers received medals and ribbons, including 10 Distinguished
Service Crosses, 256 Silver Stars, 606 Bronze Stars and 2,771 Purple Hearts; and
WHEREAS, the 65th Infantry Division was awarded the following citations: Navy Unit
Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, World War I Victory Medal, American Defense Service
Medal, America Campaign Medal, European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory
Medal, Army Occupational Medal, Presidential Unit Citation (two awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation
(two awards), Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation (two awards), and Chryssoun Aristion Andrias
(Bravery Gold Medal of Greece); and
WHEREAS, the Borinqueneers’ loyalty and dedication had an impact on the success of the Korean
War; the State of North Carolina is grateful for their efforts and proud to recognize the 65lh Infantry Division for
their dedication and sacrifice for our country;
NOW, THERFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim
November 2013, in honor of “65TH INFANTRY DIVISION - THE BORINQUENEERS” in North
Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of
North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this thirteenth day of November in the year of our Lord two thousand
and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.
