Tom Ross to Give
Commencement Address

May 7. Ross will be joined on stage
by C.D. Spangler, the second presi¬
dent of the UNC System, who will
receive an honorary Doctor of Humane
Letters degree. The 83rd annual
Commencement ceremony begins at
9 a.m. on the University Quadrangle.
Early in his career, Ross, a Greensboro
native, taught at UNC-Chapel Hill's
School of Government and was chief of
staff for U.S. Congressman Robin Britt.
He also practiced law in Greensboro.
At age 33, Ross was appointed to the
N.C. Superior Court - a position he
held for 17 years. Ross left the bench
in 2001 to serve as executive director
of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation,
which awards some $20 million annu¬
ally to non-profit groups. Ross was
named president of Davidson College
in 2007, where he served until being
named president of the UNC System.
Spangler is an accomplished North
Carolina businessman and education
leader. During his business career, he
expanded his family's holdings and is
credited with advancing the Bank of
North Carolina, founded by his father,
which today is Bank of America. After
serving on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Board of Education and as chairman of
the State Board of Education, Spangler
was named the second president
of the University of North Carolina
System in 1986. Since retiring from
that post, Spangler continues to sup¬
port education through philanthropy by
donating millions of dollars to educa¬
tion-related causes.

Meet Dr. Kimberly Newsome
With more than 16 years of experience in higher education administration ranging
from Greek Life to New Student Orientation, Dr. Kimberly Newsome was welcomed as
UNC Asheville’s new associate vice chancellor for student affairs in January.
“I think it’s so important that we provide an environment for all students that
encourages their academic, social, personal and leadership development,” said Dr.
Newsome. “And I strongly believe in helping students become involved and engaged in
their community, as well as developing a sense of connectedness to their institution.”

Dr. Kimberly Newsome
Previously she served as associate dean of students at one of UNC Asheville peer uni¬
versities, New College of Florida, also a small public liberal arts college. At New College,
she supervised the areas of Student Activities and New Student Orientation, the First Year
Experience Program, the Gender and Diversity Center, Volunteer Programs and Campus
Ministry.
She also worked at Florida State University, where she was interim assistant dean
of students and director of the First Year Experience Program, and at Emory University
where she worked as director of Greek Life.
In her new role at UNC Asheville, Newsome will supervise Campus Recreation,
Student Activities including Greek Life, Student Organizations and Student Government,
as well as special programs like Family Weekend, Parents Council, Veterans Programs and
Volunteer Programs.
What does she like most about her new job at UNC Asheville?

campus. Students have definitely helped make my transition to UNC Asheville reward¬
