ROSIE THE RIVETER DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Rosie the Riveter is an American cultural icon, representing the women who worked
during World War II in manufacturing plants, replacing men fighting in the war, and sometimes in newly
created positions; and
WHEREAS, more than 16 million women worked during World War II, contributing on the home
front to the war effort; and
WHEREAS, women worked or volunteered, often full-time, in factories, banks, farms, shipyards
and other institutions, in support of the military; and
WHEREAS, women contributed directly to the war effort as workers in munitions and war supply
manufacturing plants, and women also worked with the USO and Red Cross, and drove trucks, riveted
airplane parts, collected critical materials, rolled bandages and served on rationing boards; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to honor the working women of WWII,
recognizing their significant contribution to the success of our nation during WWII and to inspiring
generations of women;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina,
do hereby proclaim May 26, 2012, as “ROSIE THE RIVETER DAY” in North Carolina, and commend
its observance to all citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of
North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty- first day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand
and twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
